Differentiation is the name of the writing (and selling) game.
I'm into personality assessments and have taken lots of them over the years. Recently, I took a Myers-Briggs test over at www.16personalities.com (great site and presentation, by the way), and saw something in the results that I thought you, my client or prospective client, ought to know about me as a writer.
See, as a writer, I'm all about differentiation.
I want my writing to differentiate you, your company, your product, your solution.
I want to differentiate me, my company, my thinking, my writing.
So when I spot something that shouts "differentiator!" -- I'm all over it.
Like this bit from the 16personalities INFJ profile report, which notes that one of my strengths is to be insightful:
I read that, and thought, "YES!" That's why I'm good at what I do. My writing is not about sales tactics and manipulation, although I do lean on such elements in moderation, hitting readers with messages of exclusivity, scarcity, and time sensitivity when appropriate.
But for the most part, I'm all about getting to the heart of the matter -- finding out what your prospective customer wants, needs, and thinks -- and then mapping those wants, needs, and thoughts to your company, products, and services.
[By the way, if you're not familiar with the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI), you can read more about it at the Myers & Briggs Foundation. From my experience and the experiences of people I know, I can say the results are, for the most part, spot on. Of the 16 possible Myers-Briggs types, I'm an INFJ, which stands for Introversion, iNtuition, Feeling, and Judging.]
