Hiring a writer: Am I right for you? Are you right for me?

By Renae Gregoire

Am I the right writer for you?

Dear reader,

Welcome!

I'm so glad you're here.

My guess is that you're on this page for one or more reasons.

You may be looking for:

  1. The Blog Post Inspiration Deck (coming soon!)
  2. A fabulous marketing writer
  3. A supercalifragilisticexpialidocious editor
  4. Pricing for writing and editing services
  5. Inspiration for your own writing or editing biz
  6. Information on that wacky Renae girl you've bumped into  online

You'll get all that and more as you peruse this website.

But this particular message is for people in the market for a marketing writer or editor, people who want a sense of who I am, what I stand (and don't stand) for, and whether I'm a good fit for the project you have in mind.

(If you're here for other reasons, you're still free to read on but ... truly ... don't you have better things to do?)

Are you the right client for me?

Here's the thing: even as you must evaluate me -- my writing style, my marketing knowledge, my testimonials, my portfolio -- I must evaluate you, because over the years, I've gotten very clear on who my ideal client is, and who is not.

That clarity is important, because just as much as I must be a fit for you, you must be a fit for me. How else could we create beautiful content together?!?

That said, here are the profiles of my ideal and non-ideal clients.

Ideal client

Non-ideal client

  • Willing to pay for expertise
  • Expects superb quality
  • Willing to be involved, do the work
  • Energetic, likes to move fast
  • Able to read and respond to detailed emails
  • Pays on time, every time
  • Trusts and respects my experience and expertise
  • Honors boundaries
  • Values my time
  • Prepares for meetings and calls
  • Has the resources and desire to act on my recommendations
  • Understands that quality takes time
  • Values relationship over transaction
  • Looking for a bargain
  • Satisfied with 'meh' content
  • Too busy to do the work
  •  Low vibe, feet are dragging
  • Does not or will not respond to detailed emails
  • Pays ... whenever, and often late
  • Has to repeatedly be convinced of my expertise
  • Does not honor boundaries
  • Needy; wants me "on" all the time
  • Too busy to prepare for meetings
  • Lacks the resources and desire to act on my recommendations
  • Is looking for a quick fix
  • Values transaction over relationship

What do you think?

Are you an ideal client?

If so, I invite you to explore my writing and editing services. Check out my writing and editing packages. And when you're ready to talk, send me a message, or book time on my calendar for a Get Acquainted call.

Are you not an ideal client? That's okay, too. It's far better to learn that we're NOT a fit before we both invest in your project.

If you're certain that you don't need my level of expertise (not everyone does), then I recommend that you post a project on Upwork.com.

Upwork, formerly known as Elance, is where I got my start as a freelance writer back in 2002. I still use the system today, but now I use it to find people to work for me rather than to find people to work for.

Ideal or not, my wish for you is the same as I wish for all of my clients, and for all of their clients, and for every single website owner in the whole world:

To create content and content experiences that lead more people to YES!

P.S. This is post #14 in my 30 Day Blogging Challenge!
