A Book-to-Blog Experiment - The Write Idea

A Book-to-Blog Experiment

By Renae Gregoire

Trying to increase two habits I long for: reading and blogging time.

Hey there. I’m Renae, an online business owner since 2002. Running and growing that business, along with raising a family from toddlers to college students, has taken up much of my time — including my reading and blogging time.

And even though my reading and blogging time decreased, my book-buying habit did not. My shelves, along with my Kindle, are bursting at the seams with so much possibility and unexplored knowledge!

I want in on it!

Now that the kids are old enough (one is already in college and two go off to college next year), I’m ready to reconnect to both habits. I’ve tried already in several ways:

  • Creating a new reading nook in my bedroom

My reading nook

  • Reading in said nook for 30 minutes each evening
  • Blogging before opening my mail program or browser
  • Reading for five minutes each morning
  • Reading ONE PAGE each evening
  • Reading ONE PAGE each morning

Those last two attempts — reading one page each day— is something I learned from James Clear’s Atomic Habits, a book I read for work so I could ghostwrite an eight-page newsletter about it.

Blog and read ... blogging and reading ... book to blog!

This morning, I set out — again — to read for five minutes before I turned on my computer monitors. I scanned the books to my side in the office, and the title that popped out for me was Talk Triggers, by Jay Baer and Daniel Lemin.

Talk Triggers: the first book in my reading-to-blogging experiment

I wrestled it out from the book stack, sat back, and started to read. Immediately, quotes and amazing ideas started forming, things I felt and feel compelled to share with the world. I grabbed my highlighter, and lit up the page.

That’s when the idea for this reading-to-blogging experiment hit. “Maybe I can live blog this,” I thought. “Maybe I can read a few pages each day, and blog about the things I’m learning.” I realized that by doing so, I’d be reading AND blogging, the two activities I really want to kick ass at in 2019!

An internal spark ignited.

And here I am.

Consider this post the introduction to my new Book-to-Blog series. Tomorrow, I’ll share what I’ve learned in the first few pages of Talk Triggers so far, and talk about how you and I can apply it to our small businesses.

Until then, happy reading!
