How are you? I’m looking for opportunities.

By Renae Gregoire

A small change with big consequences

What do you say when people ask you how you are?

"Hey there! How are ya?!?"

If you're anything like me, you say things like:

  • I'm fine, thanks
  • I'm exhausted
  • I'm super busy
  • I'm tired

One day, when I was Zooming with my accountability buddy during our weekly call, I responded to his, "How are you?" with, "I'm exhausted."

He then told me a story ... I can't remember what it was ... but the gist of it was that when we speak words like that, it's like saying to the Universe, "Hey, I'm too beat ... too busy ... too this ... too that ... so I really can't handle any new opportunities."

And then he said, "How would it feel to respond to the question with, "I'm looking for opportunities?"

I got it right away.

"Yes!" I said, my eyes lighting up, growing wider.

"If we say something like, 'I'm looking for opportunities,'" I said, "then we're putting out the vibe that says, 'Send me more goodness!'"

This thought, and those words, mean a lot to me. I take it seriously, although I don't always remember.

But I have a sticky note here on my desk to remind me.

And I've added those same words on my Sunday Summit, which is a productivity tool from Christine Kane; my accountability buddy and I use it each week to get clear about where we've been and where we're going.

Here's what it looked like just this morning.

Looking for opportunity

I'm looking for opportunities.

I see those words all the time.

I try to remember.

And ... here's the thing.

The reason I'm sharing this is because the conversation I had with my accountability buddy happened two or three weeks ago.

And suddenly, as of right now, I have a major website writing project with a new client, and a smaller website writing project from an old client, someone I haven't worked with in several years.

Coincidence?

I don't believe in coincidence.

I'm coming off the longest business drought I've ever had, one that had me scraping by on crumbs and stale relationships.

May, 2018 will be my highest earning month in ... probably three years.

Coincidence?

I choose not to think so.

Oh, and Universe? How are you? I'm looking for opportunities.
